Mary and William Walker Sublett appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Montgomery, Montgomery Co, Alabama, enumerated 7 Jul 1870, reporting personal estate of $350. Their children Walter and Mary were listed as living with them.20 She and William appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Montgomery, Montgomery Co, Alabama, enumerated 4 Jun 1880. Their children Walter, Mary, Caroline, Willena and Sarah were listed as living with them, as was Julia McAlkin, a 35-years old mulatto, who was most likely a servant.21
After the death of her husband, Mary's sister Victoria, also recently widowed, lived with her until Victoria committed suicide in the house in 1895. Unwilling to speak of the event, the formerly close relationship between the Machen and Sublette families was suspended for some 80 years before descendants re-established connections.22 After her sister's death, Mary operated a boarding house in her red brick Queen Anne style home to keep income coming in. She was a genteel Southern lady trying to keep things going.23,24
Mary appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Clinton, Hickman Co., Kentucky, enumerated 4 Jun 1900, reporting that she owned her home. Her mother, Caroline Hanson Cresap was listed as living with her, as were her children Sarah and James, her married daughter Mary Anapola and her children, William Sublette Haun, Cecil Robert Haun and Walter Reid Haun.25 She appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Clinton, Hickman Co., Kentucky, in the household of Frediric G.
