Cemetery Source Type Using the Split CD

I formerly used a split CD method for several types of sources in order to be able to "lump" several sources into a single Source in TMG. But I have since converted of them to a "splitter" format, primarily to enable improvements in the websites I am now creating with Second Site. While I no longer particularly recommend the use of split CDs I am offering the following example for readers who would like to explore this method.

Here is a custom Source Type I have developed for cemetery markers. It requires only one Source be defined for the entire cemetery, and uses the split CD method to produce footnotes that are similar to the Mills examples:

Full Footnote:	[CD1] tombstone <, [CD2]>, [REPOSITORY], [REPOSITORY ADDRESS]<, [COMMENTS]><, [CD3]>.
Short Footnote:	[CD1] tombstone, [REPOSITORY]<, [CD3]>.
Bibliography:	[REPOSITORY ADDRESS]. [REPOSITORY]. Tombstone data.

Style notes

I have included the Comments element, where I record details like who photographed or transcribed the stones which will be referenced by this source.

Technical Notes

If you ever use the Ibid feature, be sure to select the "On-Requires Same Source and [CD]" option on the Output Form tab for each Source you create using this Source Type. If you fail to do that, and create a report which cites to more than one stone in the same cemetery, the notes may not indicate clearly which cites apply to which stone.

The "Unique Endnote" feature does not recognize split CDs. If use of that style of endnotes is important to you, you should not use this method.

The detail information, such as name on the stone, cannot appear in the Bibliography entry because it is placed in the CD. The Mills example for Cemetery Marker does not include the record detail in the Bibliography. But if you prefer to include that detail in the Bibliography you cannot use this method.

How This Source Type Works

You create one source in the Master Source List for each cemetery. When you create the Citation Details for each citation to that source, you enter the name(s) on the stone and any details like section and lot numbers as part of the CD, along with any notes specific to that particular citation. These items are separated by pairs of "pipes" (found on most keyboards above the "\" on the key at the far upper right). When you have no entry for a particular item, simply include the pipes, but leaving only a single space the missing item.

Usage Notes

In the Source Definition Screen, enter the following in the fields provided:

Attach a Repository to the Source Definition, entering:

When the Source is cited, enter the name(s) of the person(s) on the stone and detailed location information, as well as any notes, in the Citation Detail. Each part is separated by a pair of vertical lines, or "pipes." The order of the elements in the CD is:

Name(s) of person(s) on the stone
Section or other location within the cemetery
General comments

The CD might be as follows:

Caleb C. Cobb||sect. 26, lot 4||shows age 84

The resulting full footnote would be:

Caleb C. Cobb tombstone, sect. 26, lot 4, Riverview Cemetery, 146 Main St., Eddyville, Lyon Co., Kentucky, photographed by author, Jul 2001, shows age 84.
