     She was probably the female age 20 to 30 listed in the household of her husband, Melcajah Rhum Toot, in the 1840 Federal Census of Halifax Co., Virginia.10
     Mariah and Melcajah appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Halifax Co., Virginia, enumerated 3 Aug 1850, reporting real estate valued at $1600. Their children William, Charles, Sallie, Melcajah, John, James and Maria were listed as living with them, as was his sister, Amanda, and her son, William E. Bouldin, and William S. Arnett, age 9. There were 15 slaves listed as well.11,12
     Mariah and Melcajah appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Halifax Courthouse, Halifax Co., Virginia, enumerated 11 Jun 1860, reporting real estate valued at $5000 and personal estate of $7150. Their children Melcajah, James and Maria were listed as living with them, as was his sister, Amanda, and her son, William E. Bouldin. There were 13 slaves listed as well.13,14
     Her husband died on 26 Nov 1862.15,2
     Mariah appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Halifax Courthouse, Halifax Co., Virginia, in the household of her daughter Sallie and her husband, William T. Ballow Jr. She reported real estate valued at $2000 ane personal estate of $600.16
     Mariah died on 11 Feb 1871 at age 59.2 She was buried in St. John's Episcopal Church Cemetery, Halifax, Virginia.2

The tombstone for James Easley shows his name as J. Easley Toot and clearly shows he died in 1858. It is in the same style as that of his brother William and appears to be original. But the 1860 census lists James E. Toot with the family. Whether the tombstone is wrong, or he was recorded in the census in error, is unclear. No other record of his death has been found.27,28
