     John P. Hays was born on 13 May 1854 in Newberry Twp., York Co., Pennsylvania.7,8,9
     He appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Newberry, Pennsylvania, in the household of his parents, John Hays and Jane Morris.14 He appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Newberry, York Co., Pennsylvania, in the household of his parents.15 He appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Newberry, York Co., Pennsylvania, in the household of his parents.5
     John married Margaret C. Flora, daughter of George Flora and Mary A. Glenn, about 1882.10,11,12
     John and Margaret C. Flora moved their family to Cumberland Co. by 1900. They appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Mechanicsburg, Cumberland Co., Pennsylvania, at 112 South Frederick St., enumerated 1 Jun 1900, reporting they were renting their home. Their children Walter and Flora were listed as living with them.16
     John and Margaret moved their family back to his home county by 1910. They appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of York, York Co., Pennsylvania, at 648 West King St., enumerated 18 Apr 1910, reporting they were renting their home. Their children Walter and Flora were listed as living with them.17

     John and Margaret appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Newberry Twp., York Co., Pennsylvania, enumerated 9 Apr 1930, reporting they were renting their home, for $4 per month, and did not own a radio.19
     He was working in a cigar shop at age 16, probably for his older brother Crull who was a cigar maker. He was a school teacher by 1800, and a bookkeeper in 1900. He returned to teaching in the public schools by 1910. By 1930 he had retired from teaching and had become a justice of the peace.20,21,22,23,24,25,26
     John died on 28 Jun 1935 in Springettsbury Twp., York Co., Pennsylvania, at age 81.7,13 He was buried on 1 Jul 1935 in Paddletown Cemetery.1
