Becoming an Elected Official --- Text Stolen from ReigelRidge.com !! ---

Mabel was elected Fulton Co. Treasurer, effective 1 Jan 1929, after her predecessor did not run for re-election. Newspaper reports said she was one of the youngest women ever to be elected to an important office in the state. She was responsible for managing the county's approximately four million dollar annual income. She was repeatedly re-elected to six-year terms. In 1940 she reported she had worked 45 hours the last week of March, and 52 weeks the prior year, earning $5,000.31,32,33
She appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Atlanta, Fulton Co., Georgia, in the household of her parents. She reported that she owned a home valued at $10,000. Her parents and brother, in the same household, are shown as renting, apparently from her, for $50 per month. Two other couples are also listed as living in the same building and renting their homes.34
She and her parents moved to 629 Cascade Ave., S.W., about 1931.35
Mabel appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Atlanta, Fulton Co., Georgia, at 629 Cascade Ave., S.W., enumerated 3 Apr 1940, reporting she owned a home valued at $5,500 and lived in the same house in 1935. Her mother, and her brother Fain, were listed as living with her.36
When she retired after 32 years as County Treasurer at the end of 1960, the state Legislature combined her position with that of the County Comptroller. By that time the county's annual receipts were over 18 million dollars, and she was also responsible for supervising four pension funds and investing bond funds until they were spent. She had managed the office with one assistant, who had begun with Mabel's predecessor.30
Mabel died on 5 Dec 1975 in Fulton Co., Georgia, at age 87.16,17,18 She was buried on 6 Dec 1975 in Greenwood Cemetery, Atlanta, Fulton Co., Georgia.19
