A Troubled First Marriage --- Text Stolen from ReigelRidge.com !! ---

Walter married first Almarie Ernestine Peel, daughter of Dr. Charles E. Peel and Rose Ann Wearren, on 7 Jun 1924 in Urbana, Champaign Co., Illinois, at the parsonage of the First Christian Church, with Rev. E. A. Watkins officiating. She had previously been married to Francis Blair McLin.12,13,14
Walter and Almarie were living at 405 E. California Ave., Urbana, in 1927.24 They then moved in with his parents, at 306 S. Vine, in Urbana, where they are listed in the 1928 city directory.25
He was a store room clerk in a steam shop by 1920. He was an accountant at the P. and E. Store in in Urbana when he married in 1924. He is listed as an accountant for the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railway Company in the 1927 and 1928 city directories, but as a clerk in the 1930 census, so his exact position is unclear.26,27,28,29
According to family oral history Walter and Almarie where engaged in custody litigation in connection with divorce proceedings when their daughter was about two years old, with him seeking custody and her not wanting it. No record has been found of a divorce filing at that time. It seems likely this actually happened some years later.30
Walter appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Urbana, Champaign Co., Illinois, at 304½ E. Illinois, enumerated 9 Apr 1930, reporting that he rented his home for $30 per month, and owned a radio. His first wife, Almarie Ernestine Peel, and their daughter, Frances, appear to be listed with him. However the record is in some doubt because both his wife and child are recorded as Ruth, a name neither of them ever used, but neither of them has been found elsewhere in the 1930 census.31
Walter did file for divorce from Almarie on 11 May 1934 in Marion Co., Indiana, Circuit Court. No record of the disposition of the suit has been found, but she remarried in September of that year and he did in 1938. According to family oral history she later found the divorce was not final when she remarried and she and her third husband were married again after the divorce became final. However no record of them marrying again has been found.15,16

A Second Marriage --- Text Stolen from ReigelRidge.com !! ---

Walter married second Beulah Elizabeth Deniston, daughter of Charles E. Deniston and Ella P. Carrie A. Bell, on 29 Oct 1938 in Marion Co., Indiana. She was the widow of George E. Claffey.17,18
Walter and Beulah appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Indianapolis, Marion Co., Indiana, at 4411 Winthrop Ave., enumerated 2 Apr 1940, reporting that they owned a home valued at $4,500, and that he had lived in the same city, and she in the same house, in 1935. Also listed as living with them were her sister, Hazel B. Taylor, and her daughter, Melba.32
In the 1940 census his occupation is shown as timekeeper for a steam railroad. He reported he had worked 44 hours the last week of March, and had worked 52 weeks the prior year, earning $1,598.32
Walter died on 7 Dec 1949 in Urbana, Illinois, at age 50.19,20,21 He was buried in East Lawn Cemetery, Urbana, Champaign Co., Illinois.22
