Narrative:

James E. Fallen was born on 8 Dec 1823 in Charlotte Co., Virginia.5,6,7
He was probably one of the two males age 5 to10 listed in the household of his father, Simpson M. Fallen, in the 1830 Federal Census of Charlotte Co., Virginia.12
His father died before 1840, when James was about 15 years old.13 He was probably the male age 10 to 15 listed in the household of his father, Nancy A. Fears, in the 1840 Federal Census of Charlotte Co., Virginia.14
James married first Elizabeth J. Tharp on 6 Dec 1844 in Charlotte Co., Virginia.8,9,10
James and Elizabeth appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Charlotte Division, Charlotte Co., Virginia, enumerated 30 Jul 1850, reporting real estate valued at $152. Their children Emily and Charles were listed as living with them.15
He was an overseer by 1850.16,17
James and Elizabeth appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Charlotte Co., Virginia, enumerated 24 Sep 1860, reporting no real estate but personal estate of $200. Their children Emily, Charles, William, Laura, Richard and Lafayette were listed as living with them.18
James enlisted as a private in Co. A, 53rd Regiment, Virginia Infantry, 21 Apr 1862, at Suffolk, Virginia. He was discharged 17 May 1862 because he was over 35 years of age.19
After the war he became a farmer on his own.20,21
James and Elizabeth appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Roanoke, Halifax Co., Virginia, enumerated 13 Sep 1870, reporting no real estate but personal estate of $2,000. Their children William, Lafayette, Richard, Walter, Elizabeth and Joel were listed as living with them.1
James and Elizabeth appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Roanoke, Halifax Co., Virginia, enumerated 4 Jun 1880. Their children Richard, Walter and Joel were listed as living with them.2
James married second Mary C. Britton, daughter of Isham H. Britton and Mary W. Toot, on 20 Jun 1894 in Halifax Co., Virginia. She was an aunt of the woman his son Lafayette had married about 1877.4,11
James applied for a disability pension based on his civil war service on 15 May 1900, while living at Watkins, Halifax Co., Virginia. He said he was totally disabled, being almost blind and very infirm. An annual pension of $30 was approved later that month. In his application he claimed to have served in Co. I, 56th Virginia Regiment of Volunteers. There was an L. H. Fallen who served in that company, who died while a prisoner of war. That discrepancy seems not to have been noticed.22,23
James and Mary appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Roanoke, Halifax Co., Virginia, enumerated 27 Jun 1900, reporting they rented their home. Etta C. Britton, his granddaughter and her niece, was listed as living with them.24
